Product Type Antibody
Description The polyclonal antibody recognizes human surfactant protein B (SP-B). There are four surfactant-specific proteins, which are called Surfactant Protein A (SP-A), SP-B, SP-C and SP-D. SP-A and SP-D are hydrophilic surfactant proteins and are members of the collectin family. SP-B and SP-C are hydrophobic surfactant proteins, which may be the most suitable indicators of the evolutionary origin of surfactants. SP-B is synthesized by alveolar type II epithelial cells into a 40-42 kD precursor, which is then processed by proteolysis to 7.8-8 kD. SP-B enhances the spreading and stability of surfactant phospholipids in alveoli. SP-B is essential for mammalian breathing, so it is largely protected. SP-B can interact with phospholipid head groups and fatty chains, and is particularly active in enhancing the surface activity of endogenous and exogenous lung surfactants. Even low SP-B content has a measurable effect in increasing dipalmitoyl Phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), mixed synthetic lipids and column-purified lung surfactant phospholipid adsorption, dynamic surface tension reduction and/or membrane resurfacing. The lack of SP-B and other surfactant components is related to respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants and adults with respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A polyclonal antibody against porcine SP-B was produced from porcine lung, which has been reconstituted in micelles of lysophosphatidylcholine. The antibody recognizes the most prominent forms of 8 kD and 22 kD SP-B under non-reducing conditions, corresponding to the SP-B dimer. Polyclonal antibodies can cross-react with human SP-B.
