Function
As a ligand of CX3CR1 and integrin. Combined with CX3CR1. Combines with integrins ITGAV:ITGB3 and ITGA4:ITGB1. Integrins can be activated in a cx3cr1-dependent and cx3cr1-independent manner. In the presence of CX3CR1, integrin is activated by binding to the classical ligand binding site (site 1) of integrin. In the absence of CX3CR1, it binds to the second site (site 2) of an integrin that is different from site 1, enhancing the binding of other integrin ligands to site 1. The soluble forms are chemotactic T cells and monocytes, not neutrophils. The membrane-bound form promotes adhesion of these leukocytes to endothelial cells. It may be involved in regulating the adhesion and migration of white blood cells to endothelial cells.
Post-translational modifications
A soluble short 95 kDa form may be released by proteolytic cleavage from the long membrane-anchored form. O-glycosylated with core 1 or possibly core 8 glycans.
