Background
This gene encodes a membrane protein, which is involved in the increase in intracellular calcium concentration that occurs upon cell adhesion to extracellular matrix. The encoded protein is also a receptor for the C-terminal cell binding domain of thrombospondin, and it may play a role in membrane transport and signal transduction. This gene has broad tissue distribution, and is reduced in expression on Rh erythrocytes. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene.

Function
By acting as the adhesion receptor of THBS1 on platelets, it plays a role in cell adhesion and plays a role in the regulation of integrins. Plays an important role in hippocampal memory formation and synaptic plasticity (through similarity). SIRPA receptor, combined with it can prevent the maturation of immature dendritic cells and inhibit the production of cytokines by mature dendritic cells. The interaction with SIRPG can mediate cell-cell adhesion, enhance superantigen-dependent T cell-mediated proliferation, and synergistically stimulate T cell activation. May play a role in membrane transport and/or integrin-dependent signal transduction. Can prevent red blood cells from disappearing prematurely. It may be related to the changes in membrane permeability caused by virus infection.
