Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a preprohormone which is cleaved to form two biologically active peptides, adrenomedullin and proadrenomedullin N-terminal 20 peptide. Adrenomedullin is a 52 aa peptide with several functions, including vasodilation, regulation of hormone secretion, promotion of angiogenesis, and antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobial activity is antibacterial, as the peptide has been shown to kill E. coli and S. aureus at low concentration.

Function
AM and PAMP are powerful hypotension and vasodilator drugs. Many effects have been reported, most of which are related to the physiological control of body fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. In the kidneys, am is a diuretic and natriuretic. Both am and pamp inhibit the secretion of aldosterone through direct adrenal action. In the pituitary gland, both peptides at physiologically relevant doses inhibit the secretion of basal ACTH. These two peptides seem to act in the brain and pituitary gland to promote the loss of plasma volume, and these effects complement their hypotensive effects in blood vessels.
