Cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and tumor progression. Intercellular adhesion occurs in a calcium and fibronectin-independent manner. Cell adhesion molecules that mediate homosexual and heterosexual cell adhesion and other carcinogenic embryonic antigens, such as CEACAM5 and CEACAM8. The heterophilic interaction with CEACAM8 occurs in activated neutrophils. It plays a role in endothelial cells activated by neutrophil adhesion cytokines. By promoting tumor progression, it plays the role of oncogene; positively regulates cell migration, cell adhesion to endothelial cells and cell invasion. It also participates in the process of metastasis cascade to induce resistance to pancreatic adenocarcinoma and colorectal anoikis.
