Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ros/insulin receptor family of tyrosine kinases. Tyrosine-specific phosphorylation of proteins is a key to the control of diverse pathways leading to cell growth and differentiation. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Function
A receptor with tyrosine protein kinase activity. The exact function of this protein is unclear. Studies on the chimeric protein (replacement of its extracellular region with several known growth factor receptors, such as EGFR and CSFIR) have shown that it can promote growth, especially neurite growth and cell survival. The signaling pathway seems to involve the pi3k kinase pathway. Participate in the regulation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) export sites (ERESs) and the secretory pathway of ER transport to the Golgi apparatus.
