Function
Growth factors that mediate its action through EGFR, ERBB2 and ERBB4. It is necessary for heart valve formation and normal heart function. Promote the proliferation of smooth muscle cells. May be involved in macrophage-mediated cell proliferation. Fibroblasts are mitotic, but endothelial cells do not. It can bind to EGF receptor/EGFR, and has higher affinity than EGF itself. It is a smooth muscle cell mitogen that is far more effective than EGF. Also serves as a diphtheria toxin receptor.
Post-translational modifications
Several N-termini have been identified by direct sequencing. The forms with N-termini 63, 73 and 74 have been tested and found to be biologically active. O-glycosylated with core 1 or possibly core 8 glycans. Thr-47 is a minor glycosylation site compared to Thr-44.
