Function
The large binding pocket can hold several single-chain phospholipids and fatty acids, and GM2A also shows some calcium-independent phospholipase activities (similarities). Binds gangliosides and stimulates the degradation of gangliosides GM2. It only stimulates the breakdown of ganglioside GM2 and glycolipid GA2-hexosaminidase A. It extracts a single GM2 molecule from the membrane and presents it to hexosaminidase A in a soluble form, which cleaves n-acetyl-d-galactosamine and converts it to GM3 (by similarity). Has cholesterol transfer activity.
