Background
An Fc receptor is a protein found on the surface of certain cells that contribute to the protective functions of the immune system. Its name is derived from its binding specificity for a part of an antibody known as the Fc (Fragment, crystallizable) region. Fc receptors bind to antibodies that are attached to infected cells or invading pathogens. Their activity stimulates phagocytic or cytotoxic cells to destroy microbes, or infected cells by antibody-mediated phagocytosis or antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity.
Alternative Names
FcRn; Fc receptor FcRn

Cellular Localization
Plasma membrane, Endosome
Involvement in Disease
Diseases associated with FCGRT include Selective Igg Deficiency Disease and Immunodeficiency 43.
Function
Transfer passive humoral immunity from the mother to the cell surface receptor of the newborn. It binds to the Fc region of monomeric immunoglobulin and regulates its selective uptake from milk. The IgG in milk binds to the top surface of the intestinal epithelium. The resulting FcRn-IgG complex passes through the intestinal epithelium through a catheter, and IgG is released from FcRn into the blood or tissue fluid. Throughout the life cycle, circulating IgG and prolonging its half-life contribute to effective humoral immunity. In mechanism, the combination of IgG and FcRn in the acidic nucleosomes of endothelial cells and hematopoietic cells causes IgG to recirculate to the cell surface and be released into the circulation. In addition to IgG, it also regulates the homeostasis of the other most abundant circulating protein, albumin/albumin.
