CD98 molecule

CD98 is a glycoprotein that is a heterodimer composed of SLC3A2 and SLC7A5 that forms the large neutral amino acid transporter (LAT1). LAT1 is a heterodimeric membrane transport protein that preferentially transports branched-chain (valine, leucine, isoleucine) and aromatic (tryptophan, tyrosine) amino acids. LAT is highly expressed in brain capillaries (which form the blood-brain barrier) relative to other tissues.

SLC3A2 functions as a sodium-independent heterodimer. The high-affinity transporter mediates the absorption of a large number of neutral amino acids such as phenylalanine, tyrosine, levodopa, leucine, histidine, methionine and Tryptophan. As an amino acid exchanger. May play a role in the transport of levodopa across the blood-brain barrier (due to similarity). May act as the main transporter of tyrosine in fibroblasts (possibly). It may mediate the transport of l-leucine from blood to the retina through the internal blood-retinal barrier (similarity). It can mediate the transport of thyroid hormones triiodothyroxine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) through the cell membrane. When associated with LAPTM4B, the heterodimer formed by SLC3A2 and SLC7A5 is recruited into the lysosome to promote the uptake of leucine in these organelles, thereby mediating the activation of mTORC1. When administered in the form of l-cysteine or D, l-homocysteine complex, it participates in the uptake of toxic methyl mercury (MeHg). Through the stereoselective transport of l-nitrosocysteine (L-CNSO) across the membrane, it participates in the cell activity of small molecular weight nitrosothiols.
