The scaffolding protein encoded by this gene is the main component of the caveolae plasma membranes found in most cell types. The protein links integrin subunits to the tyrosine kinase FYN, an initiating step in coupling integrins to the Ras-ERK pathway and promoting cell cycle progression. The gene is a tumor suppressor gene candidate and a negative regulator of the Ras-p42/44 mitogen-activated kinase cascade. Caveolin 1 and caveolin 2 are located next to each other on chromosome 7 and express colocalizing proteins that form a stable hetero-oligomeric complex. Mutations in this gene have been associated with Berardinelli-Seip congenital lipodystrophy. Alternatively spliced transcripts encode alpha and beta isoforms of caveolin 1.

May act as a scaffold protein in the vacuolar membrane. It forms a stable heteropolymer complex with CAV2, and uses lipid rafts as the target to drive the formation of pits. Mediates the recruitment of pitulin (CAVIN1/2/3/4). It can directly interact with the subunits of the g protein and can functionally regulate its activity (through similarity). Participate in the costimulatory signal necessary for t cell receptor (TCR)-mediated t cell activation. It binds to DPP4 to induce T cell proliferation and activate nf-kpa-b in a T-cell receptor/cd3-dependent manner. CTNNB1 is recruited to the vacuole membrane and may regulate CTNNB1-mediated signal transduction (through similarity) through the Wnt pathway. By mediating the internalization of TGFBR1 on membrane rafts, it leads to its degradation, and negatively regulates the activation of SMAD2/3 mediated by tgfb1.
