BMPR
Full Name
Bone morphogenetic protein receptor
Background
There are three bone morphogenetic protein receptors in humans. Bone morphogenetic protein type I receptors are single pass, type I transmembrane proteins. They belong to a class of receptor serine/threonine kinases that bind members of the TGF beta superfamily of ligands-the Bone morphogenetic proteins. Bone morphogenetic protein receptor type II or BMPR2 is a serine/threonine receptor kinase. It binds Bone morphogenetic proteins, members of the TGF beta superfamily of ligands, which are involved in paracrine signalling.

Involvement in Disease
Diseases associated with BMPR2 include Pulmonary Hypertension, Primary, 1 and Pulmonary Venoocclusive Disease 1, Autosomal Dominant.
Related Pathways
Its related pathways are Signaling by GPCR and Signaling by BMP.
Function
On the ligand binding, a receptor complex composed of two type II and two type I transmembrane serine/threonine kinases is formed. Type II receptors phosphorylate and activate type I receptors, and type I receptors autophosphorylate, then bind and activate SMAD transcriptional regulators. Combined with BMP7, BMP2 and BMP4, the efficiency is low. The binding is weak, but the presence of type I receptors enhances BMPs. Adipogenesis is mediated by GDF6.
