Background
This gene encodes a member of the C-type lectin/C-type lectin-like domain (CTL/CTLD) superfamily. Members of this family share a common protein fold and have diverse functions, such as cell adhesion, cell-cell signalling, glycoprotein turnover, and roles in inflammation and immune response. The encoded type 2 transmembrane protein may play a role in dendritic cell function. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.

Function
Lectin-type cell surface receptors may play a role in antigen capture by dendritic cells. It specifically recognizes the galactose-terminal non-sialic acid bis-antennary glycan containing trisaccharide epitope Gal(beta1-3/4)GlcNAc(beta1-2)Man. Binding to serum IgG. Effectively target the ligand into the compartment for antigen processing and peptide loading, and then present it to T cells. It may mediate the induction and inhibition of IFN-alpha/beta expression in plasmacytoid dendritic cells. May act as a signal receptor to activate protein tyrosine kinases and mobilize intracellular calcium.
