The protein encoded by this gene is a plasma membrane protein that is important in spermatogenesis, embryo implantation, neural network formation, and tumor progression. The encoded protein is also a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

Function
SLC16A1, SLC16A3, SLC16A8, SLC16A11, SLC16A12 and other monocarboxylic acid transporters target the cell membrane. It plays a key role in spermatogenesis, embryo implantation, neural network formation and tumor progression. Stimulates adjacent fibroblasts to produce matrix metalloproteinases (MMPS). It seems to be a receptor for oligosaccharides. In vitro, promote the growth of astrocyte processes. [Isoform 1]: It can induce monocytes to produce IL6 and other pro-inflammatory cytokines. (Microbial infection) Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte RH5 receptors were isolated from 3D7, Dd2, 7G8 and HB3. RH5 is the receptor necessary for the red blood cell invasion of Plasmodium falciparum merozoite. The binding of Plasmodium falciparum RH5 leads to dimerization of BSG, which triggers an increase in Ca(2+) in red blood cells. This important step leads to the rearrangement of the red blood cell cytoskeleton required for merozoite invasion.
